Ngapala is a rural locality in the Mid North region of South Australia, situated in the Regional Council of Goyder. It was established in August 2000, when boundaries were formalised for the “long established local name”. It is divided between the cadastral Hundreds of English and Julia Creek. (ref: Wikipedia)
Two kms to the south of the Ngapala church and school is an historic police heritage site marking the spot of the Julia Creek Mounted Police station which operated from 1842 to 1846. At that time it was the most northerly police outpost in colonial South Australia. It was mainly located there to calm relations between the pastoralists of Anlaby sheep station and the local Ngadjuri Aboriginal people. Two mounted police officers were stationed here on six monthly rotations with one mounted Native Aboriginal police officer. Unveiling of Police Heritage Site Plaque & Monument – The Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery were at the unveiling on Friday 17th November 2000.
Famous Australian Author and Educator Colin Thiele AC grew up in this area and based some of his books on the people and land of this region.
