Eudunda is a rural town in South Australia, 115 kilometres northeast of Adelaide (about 1 hour 15 mins drive), established in 1870 after settlers began moving into the area in the 1860s.
Eudunda was originally named after a Ngadjuri word “eudundacowi” meaning “water out of the ground”. The hidden springs, made Eudunda an important stopover point for famous cattle men such as Sir Sydney Kidman, driving their stock to the Kapunda and Adelaide markets. Eudunda grew rapidly as a German settlement, which is still evident today.
The town was the birthplace to famous author, Colin Thiele who’s boyhood home still stands. Novels such as “Sun on the Stubble”, “The Shadow on the Hills” and “Uncle Gustav’s Ghost” are timeless classics of Thiele’s childhood in Eudunda, which he renamed Gonunda in his writings. Today Eudunda salutes Colin Thiele with a bronze sculpturein the Centenial Gardens, and silhouettes of Gustav and His Dog at the three town entrances. Additionally you will find Gustav and His Dog Markers around the town and district marking historic points of interest on the Colin Thiele Drive.
Eudunda was also the birthplace of Eudunda Farmers Cooperative, which became a force in the retail industry. Another business which started and was based in Eudunda was Hambours Limited, who operated many stores in SA and made a great business out of selling ‘Remnants’ (offcuts of material) to residents who then used them for all sorts of clothing and handi-work. The present Eudunda Family Heritage Gallery is situated in the old Hambour buildings.
Eudunda is described by some as ‘A beautiful town nestled amongst the Northern Mount Lofty Ranges, Eudunda exhibits a peaceful ambience, and pride in it’s German heritage.’ Proudly part of the Heartland Heritage Trail, Eudunda’s heritage can be discovered at the Family Heritage Gallery and Gosling Cottage, located in the main street.

Access to Eudunda from Burra
Eudunda is an easy 45 minute drive from Burra. Visitors may follow the Heartland Heritage Trail from Burra, onto the Morgan Road, then right onto the Robertstown Road. Travel into Robertstown, turning left at the pub. This road leads to Point Pass and Eudunda.
