Hotel’s Grand History
The Light Hotel is situated on the main intersection in the centre of the historic town of Eudunda. First trading on the 15th of August 1878, the licensee, William Potter, originally named the hotel “The Royal”. the Royal hotel was an important stop for teamsters bringing stock and goods from the Murray River at Morgan to the sea ports of Port Wakefield and Adelaide. As the young town began to grow, commercial activity grew around the solid and dependable Royal, developing Bruce Street as the centre of Eudunda. On the 5th of March 1959, as a result of a competition run by the S.A. Brewing Co., the Royal became the “Light” and continued to be the focal point for the main street’s business and social activity. For over 130 years, the building has remained one of the town centre’s focal points, being a dominant feature of the main street’s landscape, a meeting place for community groups and residents of Eudunda and surrounding districts.
