Our Guest Speaker Susan Moore, (Rodney and Fay Grosser’s daughter) gave an illustrated talk on her and her husband David Moore’s involvement, working with the Aboriginal communities around Alice Springs. They teach languages at the Alice Springs Language Centre. The centre enables young people to learn English and for many their own and Asian languages so that they can gain employment in the Community in a variety of jobs, many of which rely on language to support the communities with less English skills (such as nurses, interpreters guides to name a few).
“it is a great concept it helps us keep our language alive and strong and i speak my language which is Mardu and i am also learning Arrernte” said Year 10 Student Nathaniel Newberry.
David also works for the Finke River Mission as a Bible translator and travels to outback Aboriginal Stations translating the Bible into the Arrernte and other local languages.
Susan has worked in Ethiopia, New Guinea, Hermannsburg Mission (where she met David), and now she is the Principal at the Language Centre. www.alicespringslanguagecentre.com
Recently Susan travelled with her daughter for two weeks to the Kimberly Ranges in West Australia to the remote Kachana Station, 120km South-West of Kununurra. Comprising a 77,500 hectares pastoral lease managed by Chris & Jacqueline Henggeler and their family. This station is so remote that it is only accessible by foot, horse-back, donkey or plane. Of interest is the owners have a conservation project experimenting and documenting with regenerative growth and wild donkeys which remain on the property.
